Introduction

HAST and BHAST are two highly used methods for testing the design flaws and properties of electronic components. They are used by many industries to check whether or not their product is up to the industrial standards. It has helped in improving the properties of various electronic components by leaps and bounce. These two mechanisms have replaced virtually all other testing mechanisms used in various industries. These mechanisms are nowadays a go-to option of every engineer and manufacturer. These methods are used to test the reliability and durability of semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, modules, cars and many more.

High Accelerated Stress Test (HAST)

HAST is an acronym for High Accelerated Stress Test. It is used to check and test the early flaws and shortcomings of electronic components. It checks them by subjecting them to harsh temperature and humidity conditions. This helps the manufacturers to better understand the workings of their product in high humid conditions. It creates a lot of room for improvement and upgradation. These tests are conducted in special chambers called the HAST chambers. These chambers are designed in a way to avoid any leakage. This helps in keeping the high stress levels intact for the testing process of the semiconductors. It has many applications in semiconductor devices, integrated circuits and various kinds of modules.

Biased High Accelerated Stress Test (BHAST)

BHAST stands for Biased High Accelerating Stress Test. This mechanism is a slight extension to High Accelerating Stress Test (HAST). It is used to detect potential design flaws, early shortcomings and weak links in electronic components. It incorporates electrical biasing into its testing mechanism which then detects the potential flaws. It is considered more accurate as far as high reliability testing and endurance is concerned.

Difference between HAST and BHAST

High Accelerating Stress Test (HAST) and Biased High Accelerating Stress Test (BHAST) are both efficient tools for the detection of design flaws in electronic components. They both are also favored by engineers to improve their design shortcomings and fulfil user expectations.

However, there are also some important differences between the two methodologies which create a dicing line between them. These differences are understood before the selection of either of them. Let’s explore these differences in detail below:  

1. Environmental Conditions

One of the most important and dividing difference between HAST and BHAST is their environmental conditions. HAST tests subject their prototypes to high temperature, pressure and humidity levels. These are generally considered environmental factors. On the other hand, BHAST incorporate high temperature and humidity levels as well as electric stress. Like this, BHAST incorporates a combined stress on its prototypes. This helps in evaluating a more in-depth reliability analysis of the electronic components.   

2. Test Duration

One more important difference between HAST and BHAST is their test duration. Both mechanisms are indeed fast and offer quick results. But BHAST is quicker than HAST. The average time for testing electronic components in HAST is 96 hours. On the contrary, the average time for testing electronic components in BHAST is 24 to 48 hours. This marks a significant difference between the two testing mechanisms. This shows that BHAST has a greater accelerating factor as compared to HAST. BHAST helps to make quick improvements in the design as compared to HAST.  

3. Stress Bias

While HAST testing does not create any bias, BHAST testing introduces a bias toward particular failure mechanisms. As a result, BHAST testing can identify particular failure modes with more accuracy, whereas HAST testing offers a more comprehensive evaluation of product reliability.

4. Cost Effectiveness

The testing setup of HAST is not very complex and can be easily used. But, the testing setup of BHAST is very complex and intricate. It is also expensive than HAST. This makes HAST a favorable option for manufacturers in terms of cost effectiveness.  

5. Accuracy  

Both HAST and BHAST render accurate results for products under harsh conditions. The only difference is that BHAST provides slightly more accurate results as compared to HAST. This is due to its electric bias in the product. HAST provides a general and comprehensive analysis of the product’s shortcomings. BHAST provides a more specific and high reliability analysis for the product’s flaws. Both can be used depending upon the user requirements.

Applications

HAST has applications in electronic components. These include semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, various kinds of modules and many more.

BHAST has applications in more complex and high accuracy industries. These include aerospace, automotive industries and many more.

On the other hand, BHAST includes harsh environmental conditions as well as electric bias for its testing. Their use is completely depended upon the requirements of the user.
