I do not have a traditional music school (6 years on the piano), but I finished 2 years of the Rock Lyceum in the recreation center “Krasny Khimik”, having attended a class on the basics of solfeggio and having studied guitar from two teachers.
At about the age of 14 I started playing in groups, and I continue to do this to this day, now I am already “over 30”, and we can safely say that I have been doing music for more than half of my life. At the same time, I am not a professional musician, I work in IT, and music is my hobby. I performed with various groups at concerts in small clubs (“Dump”, “Chinese Pilot Zhao-Da”, “Milk”, and large music festivals “Invasion”, “Motoyaroslavets”.
From the very beginning of my music lessons, I decided for myself that I would compose my own pieces of telugu movie songs, and would not play other people’s songs. I can’t say why I decided that, but the fact remains.
For many years of communication with those who play and compose music, the main pain is how to compose your own “author” music. I have identified 5 methods or ways of how to compose music.
1. Method based on inspiration
A state in which a melody is born in your head, and you simply transfer a piece of music “on paper”. Your “inner” voice “does everything” for you, you just need to catch this state and remember the result. It is very convenient, it seems to you that the melody comes to you “from outside”, or from such depths of subconsciousness that in the normal state, it is impossible to get there. It seems surprising that it was you who could have composed such a melody, since in ordinary life such a thing seems unreal.
Of the minuses, we note that inspiration is “capricious” and may not visit you for a long time. Inspiration can be especially timid when deadlines are tight and you need to deliver results.
It is also possible harm caused to health, when trying to “stimulate” inspiration, which, unfortunately, cannot be stimulated.
2. “Methodological” way
You are a professional and just “write” a composition according to all the rules of creating music, relying on stylistic “genre” features. This is a professional approach based on knowledge, the resulting result may not be very interesting from the point of view of art in general, but it is an effective way to create creative products.
All popular music uses this method, as it is the most predictable and understandable in attempts to win the sympathy of the end listener. But despite this, a share of unpredictability still remains even when using this method, since it is impossible to predict 100% what will “enter” the listener and what will not.
3. “Referral” method
A way when you take someone else’s composition as a basis and imitate it with slight differences in “features”, so significant that your composition no longer resembles the original that you “inspired” by. Sound, musical form and mood copied to some extent.
The author “composer” takes the composition “example”, passes it through his “brains” and issues a new “author’s” version of the original. There an opinion that everything is invented in this way, since nothing new can invented. But only “variations on a theme” possible. In this case, the author simply adapts the idea according to local characteristics and preferences.
4. “Generative” method
A method that combines knowledge of the basics of musical composition, mastery of a specific musical genre and the ability to use devices and programs that randomly generate notes, thus creating melodies and a sound palette from which the future musical composition is assembled.
This method makes the most of sound design (sound design) and most often used when creating musical compositions in electronic music. A method of random search, trial and countless variations. It should noted that with the apparent mechanization and robotization of the composing process, no Artificial Intelligence has been able to write something more or less worthwhile using this method, that is, the role of the author still remains central.
5. “Improvisational” method
This method often used in “live” music, when the musicians agree on the key and tempo of the “fish” and then begin to play “improvise” in search of new themes and moves for the future composition. With this method, it is important to record in time to “highlight” the resulting episodes and collect new material from them. It is best to record such improvisations on a dictaphone, the quality of the recording does not matter here, the main thing is that the melody and the main details can be recognized on the recording. Further, with this, you can continue to work at home, supplementing and combining the essay.
I did not single out a hybrid of the above methods, which allows you to compose your own music, as a separate method, perhaps there are some other methods or variations of methods.
