Child Navigate Online Learning

At-Home Learning Tips For Parents: 9 Ways To Help Your Child Navigate Online Learning. With COVID-19 causing rapid widespread closures of schools all over the world, kids across the globe are being given alternative resources to continue their education outside of the classroom.

We have online tutoring, online classroom tools like Google Classroom, resources, and assignments sent via e-mail, learning packets sent out by schools, and video conferences and podcasts by teachers – a few alternatives to make learning possible during these difficult times.

The transition to this “new normal” isn’t easy, especially for younger minds who will have no choice but to adapt to the new set-up. As parents, we play a big role in preparing our children for online learning at home, helping them stay focused, and make their experience worthwhile.

Check out these 9 ways you can help your kids learn effectively at home.

1. Set up a dedicated learning space for your child

Do you have to set up a home office to help you stay focused at work? Similarly, you must create a special dedicated space for your child’s learning.

Creating a quiet, clutter-free, and comfortable space that’s strictly devoted to learning helps kids achieve their best work. If possible, keep the area away from distractions, including places where they usually play games or watch TV.

2. Create a schedule and stick to it

While we love the flexibility of remote education, it’s important to set a schedule and stick to it.

Take your child’s learning pace into consideration, as well as your family’s day-to-day routine. What time is your kid most awake and ready to learn? Does your kid need a lot of help from you or any adult in the household to get started? What’s the best time for providing support to your kid?

Experts recommend keeping their sleep and study schedule as close to their normal school routine, with a few short breaks to refresh their minds. Encourage them to get up from time to time to have some snacks, get some fresh air, go for a walk, or do some short yet energizing activities.

3. Limit distractions

Our homes contain lots of distractions, from noisy TVs and game consoles to toys and playful pets. List down the things your child tends to get distracted with then find ways to limit them during study time.

Perhaps you can put Max, your beloved golden retriever, in a separate room when your kid is doing schoolwork. If games and social media are huge disturbances, you may limit your kid’s use of personal gadgets until their schoolwork is done, or block these apps on your child’s device during learning time. Lastly, you may turn off the Wi-Fi after downloading an assignment to help them focus on the task at hand.

4. Encourage them to move

Don’t let your kid be sedentary for the entire day: encourage them to get plenty of exercises. Aside from keeping the body fit and strong, exercise also has a positive impact on how we think. Any form of physical activity improves problem-solving, memory, attention, and even reduces stress and prevents anxiety.

Look for family-friendly workouts that can be done without leaving your home. Encourage them to exercise before tackling schoolwork and/or take exercise breaks throughout the day.

5. Limit screen time by mixing old school learning media

The overuse of screen time can have an adverse impact, not only on your child’s vision but also on their young brains. With this, it’s important to let their eyes rest from screens and incorporate old school learning mediums. You may request textbooks from your child’s school or tutor, or print their learning materials at home.

6. Acknowledge your child’s learning barriers

Is your child struggling with reading, writing, and understanding learning materials? Perhaps you can explore the accessibility features you have on your phones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

These include read aloud or text-to-speech features for struggling readers, speech-to-text features for struggling writers, adjusting the settings to slow down the playback speed of videos, and showing captions.

7. Reach out to your kid’s teacher or tutor

While you’re confident that your child’s online English tutors and Math tutors are excellent, you must also be proactive when it comes to your child’s education. You may support your child by reaching out to their teacher or tutor.

Talk about the challenges your kid is facing, including their learning barriers. Review your child’s upcoming instruction. Understand the expectations of the subject. Being hands-on is essential especially if your child is struggling in school or his/her online tutoring sessions.

8. Schedule a video chat session with their friends and classmates

Social interaction is one of the most flavorful ingredients that make school fun for your kids. It’s the priceless moments they share with their friends inside the school bus, the conversations they have during lunch breaks, and the fun playtimes after school. Without social contact, it’s common for kids to feel lonely and detached.

While it’s still unsafe to see their friends in person, allow them to interact online. Think beyond social media and text messaging: let them see them face to face and hear them through video chats.

9. Don’t forget to schedule a time for fun

While the lockdown is most certainly not a vacation, it’s nice to set a schedule for fun activities that foster family bonding. You may organize a tournament, movie nights, family card games, charades, backyard picnics, and even a leisurely walk around the village with your kiddos.
