There are several ways to use Google ads on your Shopify store, but one really effective way is retargeting. Retargeting means that you advertise to people who have already visited your shop before. Upon their return, these visitors will see your ad everywhere on the internet, reminding them that they were looking at a product from your store and driving them back there to make a purchase.

So how do you go about setting up Google ads on Shopify? Follow these steps:
1) Create Your Campaign On Google Ads First things first, if you haven’t already created a campaign on Google Ads, you need to. Otherwise, your campaign won’t have a budget assigned and won’t run. If you already have a campaign going, skip this step!
If you don’t know how to create a Google Ads campaign. Once created, move on to the next step.
2) Assign Your Budget In order for your ad campaigns to work as effectively as possible, they should be assigned a daily budget that will last the whole month. This ensures that clicks are spread out evenly throughout the entire month rather than peaking at the beginning of it and going unused towards the end.
Once you’ve created your Google Ads campaign, it’s time to assign a budget! Your Google Ads dashboard will look something like this:
Find the “Budget & Schedule” tab on the left-hand side of your screen. This is where you can input your budget and schedule for each of your campaigns. Input how much money you want to spend per day for this campaign (Google recommends that new Store owners not go over $3 per day), and hit “Save And Continue”.
After hitting save, choose the date range of when this budget will be active – then click “Schedule”. You’re all done setting up your Google Adwords campaign!
Now that’ve created the first part of your campaign, it’s time to set up your retargeting strategy. It will be important that you follow the same steps for the rest of your stores in order to maintain uniformity and results across all of them!
3) Create Your Ad Groups Now that you’ve created your Google ad and assigned a budget, it’s time to start creating some ads! Each separate ad group needs its own ad – this is because each product (or group of products if you’re selling multiple items in one listing) should have its own advertisement so that people who browse for different items are met with different ads.
Create an ad group for each separate type of product that you sell in your store. Continue creating ads for each ad group until you’ve created an advertisement for every product that you’re selling. Here’s a short Google Ads tutorial video on how to do this:
4) Check Your Analytics This next part can be done in conjunction with step 3 if you prefer, but it is important enough to merit its own section! After setting up your retargeting campaign, go check out the “Acquisition” tab of Google Analytics. Once there, look at your overall data to determine which products are driving the most traffic to your Shopify Store. Then find their corresponding ad groups in Google Ads and edit them!
In most cases, there will be a certain product that is driving the majority of your traffic. In this case, it’s most efficient to set up an ad specifically targeted at people who are likely to buy that product. This ensures that you’re spending as much time and money as possible on ads that convert into sales!
5) Optimize & Test Once you’ve created your Google Adwords retargeting campaigns and analyzed their effectiveness using Google Analytics, it’s time for the final step: optimization! After a few days or a week has passed, go back into Google Analytics and check out how many views each of your ads have gotten. Then find those corresponding ads in Google Ads and re-write them if necessary! Also check whether or not people are converting on your ads – if you have conversion tracking enabled in Google Analytics, this should be quite easy. After doing this, wait a few more days and check back in to see how your ads are doing! Keep editing them until they’re perfect. Once you’ve got the hang of it down, go into Google Ads and start creating new ad groups for other products that you want to sell – make sure to keep an eye on your analytics throughout this process to continuously optimize your campaigns!
